Earlier this year, Mickie James made a return to the WWE universe by challenging NXT Women’s Champion Asuka to a title match. While Asuka won, James impressed, and it seemed like it wouldn’t be the last we saw of James. Now, James has gotten one step closer to making her debut.

James reportedly took her physical December 22, and if she is cleared for action, the plan is for her to debut on Smackdown soon. Yes, the blue brand’s already impressive collection of female wrestlers is about to get even better. Considering that recently Becky Lynch lost to Alexa Bliss due to the inference of a mysterious La Luchadora, the thinking in some circles is that James will turn out to be La Luchadora, and that she will start a feud with Lynch (presumably while Bliss feuds with Nikki Bella). Now, this is not to say that James was La Luchadora on the last Smackdown, but that’s the beauty of a character who wears head to toe clothes and a mask.

When James was in WWE before, she had a ton of success, winning the Women’s title five times, and the rebranded Divas title once. That was in the bad old days of women’s wrestling, though, when it wasn’t taken seriously and women were mostly there to be ogled. Now, women’s wrestling has a legitimate place in WWE, and James will only take the women’s division on Smackdown to the next level.
