It has become more and more apparent during the past couple weeks that Brock Lesnar will not be defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WWE’s October pay-per-view, “Hell in a Cell.” Past reports state that WWE chose not to book Lesnar for the event because of the WWE Network. The company reportedly believes that with the $9.99 price tag on the WWE Network and subsequent dwindling pay-per-view business, it is not necessary to have its major title defended on every pay-per-view.

In early September, it appeared that Lesnar would be able to work more pay-per-views and television dates than he did in 2012 and 2013. Soon after winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at “SummerSlam,” reports surfaced that Lesnar would be able to work any date WWE wanted him to, and he would be paid extra money for the added dates.

However, it does not appear that Lesnar will be working a substantial amount of added dates. In fact, as of this writing, Lesnar is not advertised for any pay-per-view, “Monday Night Raw,” or “Smackdown” through 2014. Though, as always, WWE’s advertisements will likely add more Superstars as the date for the event nears. Lesnar, being a big attraction, typically has his dates advertised well in advance, so he may indeed not be added to any more events in 2014.

It is all purely speculation at this point, but if Lesnar were to not work any more pay-per-view events in 2014, he would have worked four in total this year: “Royal Rumble,” WrestleMania XXX, “SummerSlam,” and “Night of Champions.” Four pay-per-view events are the most Lesnar has worked in one calendar year since his return to WWE in 2012.

Editor’s Note

I honestly don’t know how WWE could keep Lesnar off of television through 2014. It would mean that he does not defend his title for more than three months. I don’t see WWE doing that, and expect him to get added to at least one more pay-per-view in 2014.
