Last month, Darren Rovell of ESPN reported that WWE chairman Vince McMahon sold 3.34 million WWE shares, which adds up to $100 million, and on top of that, his new self-funded company called Alpha Entertainment filed for five different XFL trademarks. So, it seems quite clear that McMahon is going to take another shot at creating an alternative to the National Football League.

This week’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter provided an update on the WWE chairman’s latest business venture, as Dave Meltzer wrote that McMahon’s Alpha Entertainment filed a trademark for the initials “UFL,” however, he wasn’t able to get the rights to the abbreviation for his new, re-branded football league, as the trademark is owned by a fitness group called the Urban Fitness League.

The “UFL” the McMahon is trying to trademark will stand for the United Football League, and while they would be allowed to call it that, they wouldn’t be able to use the initials UFL, at least as of right now.

Some reports suggest that McMahon originally planned to call it the URFL, so if he’s not able to get UFL trademarked, the league may end up being named the URFL.
